📄 Editorial Review

iPage was a long-running American web hosting brand founded in 1998 by Tomas Gorny. The company became known as a budget-friendly hosting provider for individuals, small businesses, bloggers, and first-time website owners who wanted a simple way to launch a website without dealing with advanced server administration.

The brand later became part of Endurance International Group, which eventually became part of Newfold Digital. Unlike several older EIG-era brands that were quietly left behind or closed earlier, iPage remained active for many years as one of the group’s promoted budget hosting brands. That changed when iPage was moved into the Network Solutions ecosystem. The independent iPage hosting brand is now inactive, and ipage.com redirects users toward Network Solutions / account-management related services rather than operating as a normal standalone hosting storefront.

During its active years, iPage offered a broad set of entry-level hosting and web services, including Web Hosting, WordPress Hosting, VPS Hosting, Dedicated Servers, Domain Registration, SSL certificates, email, website tools, and online marketing features. Their strongest identity was not high-end infrastructure, but affordable hosting with many included extras for small websites.

The classic iPage shared hosting package included scalable bandwidth, unlimited domain names, unlimited MySQL databases, a free domain for the first year, website design tools, templates, email, free SSL, and a drag-and-drop site builder. The package was simple and beginner-oriented, but the downside was that iPage did not offer the same variety of shared hosting tiers found at many competitors.

Their VPS Hosting plans included a free domain, managed support, and pre-installed scripting support such as PHP, Perl, and Python. Their Dedicated Servers added stronger isolated resources and included dedicated IP addresses, usually between 3 and 5 IPs, depending on the selected server plan. WordPress Hosting was also available, with unlimited storage and bandwidth, pre-installed themes and plugins, free domain registration, and an easier setup process for WordPress users.

iPage also offered several useful extras, including free domain transfer, free domain registration, free email address, free templates, free SSL certificate, free ad credits, and a free drag-and-drop website builder. These features made the brand attractive for users who wanted many tools bundled into one low-cost hosting account.

😠 Domain renewal nigthmare
Ipage use to be a good hosting company, but in the last few years they have gone downhill. Sure support is available 24 hours a day but youl will spend at least 1 hour on the phone waiting to take to support and online chat takes longer. Beware of what you sign up for, this is a company that will try to nickel and dime you to death, including after your purchase. When you log into your control panel you will be presented with several offers to purchase addition services, You will need to decline these offers before you can get to your control panel. Also be careful where you click in your control panel because the control panel is littered with ads for additional services. In the last month I have had several problems with ipage on multiple domains I manage.
BEWARE: When I was renewing my ipage hosting, my domains showed an expiration that was good for another year. At this point I’m thinking "ok, I must have purchased the domains for 2 years instead of 1 year" so because the expiration dates showed the domain was good for another year I did not renew yet. 30 days later I discovered my sites are all down and unreachable. While calling support (after waiting for 72 minutes before customer support picks up) I was told that the domain expired 30 days prior and the expiration dates are wrong so the domains are in redemption and it will cost $160 per domain to remove them from redemption. Once paid it will take 24 to 48 hours before the sights come back up.
Ipage stated that this issue was my fault for not renewing the domains even though their system was wrong and the domains displayed an expiration date of December 2015.
After researching ipage and their redemption fees, I discovered that I am not the first one to have this problem. It would seem ipage purposely displays the wrong expiration dates in order to raise extra capital.
So let this be a lesson for anyone who is thinking of using ipage to host their site. BUYER BEWARE!
If you are wondering if I paid the $160 per domain to get them out of redemption. Yes, because the business I lost outweighs the fees charged.

😠 iPage Borders on Credit Card Fraud
iPage borders on committing credit card fraud. I have carefully set my accounts to only manually renew (set them NOT to auto-renew) for two years in a row and yet iPage has automatically charged my credit card to renew hosting services for each year. I have then had to call iPage staff to ask them to refund my card. The iPage staff never seem to care about the problem and the card does not get refunded. I have then had to call back a second time to finally get my money back for the services I did not intend to purchase in the first place. This means that iPage is charging a credit card that they DO NOT HAVE PERMISSION TO USE for services that the client did not agree to purchase.

In addition, iPage uses deceptive practices to make it appear that consumers are receiving a cheap service when in reality it is expensive after the first year. They do this by offering VERY inexpensive services for the first year and not advertising anywhere that the prices will go up by roughly 14 times the second year (roughly $8 for the first year and $107 for each subsequent year). They don't overtly lie to consumers, but rather omit information that would be critical to understanding the whole picture. Most reasonably people will assume that the advertised price is more or less the continuous price unless it is mentioned that it is a "first year special price" or a "discount off the first year of service". The page probably says in fine print somewhere that prices may change, but I am not a stupid person and I have never been able to find it. Ergo, most average people like me probably will not see it.

The bottom line is that iPage appears to either be HIGHLY inefficient in their billing and credit card processing systems or to be leaving errors in their system that may generate additional income by auto-charging people unawares. They are then not very responsive to requests for correction of the problem. Last, the initial driver of the problem was that iPage increased their prices by 14 times in one year, causing me to decide not to renew my service in the first place.
