IONOS Germany is one of Europe's largest web hosting, domain registration, server and cloud infrastructure providers. Its origins date back to 1988, when Ralph Dommermuth established 1&1 Marketing GmbH. The hosting business developed for decades under the 1&1 name before 1&1 Internet merged with Berlin-based infrastructure specialist ProfitBricks in 2018. The combined operation became IONOS by 1&1 in 2019 and subsequently adopted the shorter IONOS brand.

The company operates under IONOS Group SE, with United Internet AG (united-internet.de) as its controlling shareholder. United Internet held approximately 63.8% of IONOS Group as of June 30, 2026. IONOS Group is publicly traded in Frankfurt and belongs to Germany's MDAX and TecDAX indices. By the first half of 2026, the group served approximately 6.91 million customers, with its wider infrastructure managing around 22 million domains and a substantial fleet of physical and virtual servers.

The German operation extends far beyond conventional shared hosting. Its portfolio includes Domain Registration, Linux Web Hosting, WordPress Hosting, Windows/ASP.NET Hosting, VPS, Dedicated Servers, GPU Servers, Bare Metal, Public Cloud, Private Cloud, Kubernetes, Cloud Storage, Backup, Email Hosting, Hosted Exchange, Website Builder, E-commerce, SSL Certificates, DNS, CDN and several AI-oriented services.

The German website operates in German and uses EUR as its principal currency. WHTop uses IONOS Germany dedicated cloud infrastructure and can also confirm the availability of English-language support. Although this is not always officially stated, their support staff generally communicate in acceptable English both by phone and via email.. IONOS also maintains localized operations for international markets, including English, French, Spanish and other European languages. Customers outside Germany can therefore use regional storefronts with locally adapted products, pricing and support.

The Linux Web Hosting range remains organized around Standard, Plus, Premium and Ultimate packages. Standard provides 100 GB NVMe storage, Plus increases this to 200 GB, Premium includes 350 GB and Ultimate reaches 500 GB. Higher packages increase processing priority, database allocations and other resources. The environment includes Linux-based hosting, MariaDB databases, SSL certificates, automated backups, DDoS protection and domain integration. Traffic and hosted websites are broadly unrestricted within the technical resource limits of each package.

The shared-hosting platform remains a practical choice for personal websites, small and medium-sized businesses, content management systems and moderately demanding online stores. Customers can operate websites and databases without administering the underlying operating system, while automatic platform maintenance reduces the workload compared with VPS or dedicated infrastructure.

CDN availability requires attention because newer shared-hosting contracts differ from older generations. Web Hosting tariffs introduced from September 10, 2024 do not universally include the previously available CDN functionality. Customers requiring an integrated CDN should confirm that the selected hosting package includes the necessary service rather than assuming it is standard across all contracts.

WordPress Hosting is available through Start, Grow, Boost and E-Commerce packages. Start includes 25 GB NVMe storage, Grow increases capacity to 50 GB, Boost provides 75 GB and E-Commerce reaches 100 GB. Unlike generic PHP hosting with an automated WordPress installer, these packages provide a managed environment specifically designed for WordPress.

The WordPress platform includes automatic updates, daily backups, SSL, DDoS protection, security scanning and AI-assisted website creation. The Windows/ASP.NET Hosting range has changed considerably from the older Essential, Business and Pro shared-hosting packages. Current Windows configurations are more infrastructure-oriented, beginning at approximately 2 vCores, 2 GB RAM and 80 GB NVMe storage, with larger configurations reaching 16 vCores, 64 GB RAM and 960 GB NVMe.

These environments support Microsoft Windows Server, ASP.NET, MSSQL and MySQL, with administration handled through the IONOS Cloud Panel. Available deployment regions include Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain and the United States. The modern Windows range provides substantially more infrastructure flexibility than the conventional shared Windows hosting previously associated with IONOS.

The current VPS+ generation is another important development. Its configurations range from S+ through M+, L+, XL+ and XXL+. The entry S+ package includes 1 vCore, 2 GB RAM and 60 GB NVMe storage, while XXL+ reaches 12 vCores, 24 GB RAM and 720 GB NVMe.

VPS+ includes root access, IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity, DDoS protection, unmetered traffic and network connections of up to 1 Gbit/s. Customers can also use virtual-machine cloning, additional virtual machines, private networking, load balancing, block storage, object storage and one-click applications. An AI assistant integrated into Cloud Panel provides additional assistance with configuration and server-management tasks.

Deployment options span European, United States and United Kingdom regions. VPS+ carries a 99.99% availability commitment, making it suitable for business websites, development environments, application hosting and workloads that require more administrative control than shared hosting.

The Dedicated Server portfolio covers Intel and AMD hardware, storage-focused configurations and GPU-oriented systems. Dedicated customers receive physical computing resources rather than shared virtual CPU allocations, with operating-system choices, RAID configurations, DDoS protection and high-bandwidth network connectivity.

Hardware development continued during 2026 with Intel Xeon 6 Granite Rapids configurations offering 16-, 24-, 32- and 48-core processors. The GPU portfolio also expanded toward NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition hardware with 96 GB of GPU memory, addressing AI inference, rendering, accelerated computing and other GPU-intensive workloads.

The IONOS Cloud platform is designed for developers, infrastructure teams and larger organizations. It includes virtual compute, bare metal, block and object storage, Managed Kubernetes, private container registries, Managed Kafka, managed databases, cloud networking, VPN gateways, load balancing, monitoring, logging, backup and GPU virtual machines.

Managed database offerings cover technologies including PostgreSQL, MariaDB and MongoDB, while Private Cloud uses VMware technology. The cloud portfolio also includes AI Model Hub and GPU computing resources. During 2026, Confidential Computing based on AMD SEV-SNP technology became available, providing additional protection for information while it is being processed inside supported virtual machines.

Domain Registration remains an important part of the business. IONOS supports German and international domain extensions, integrated DNS management, SSL, domain security and convenient integration with its hosting and email services. Customers can manage multiple domains and related resources through a common account.

Email Hosting ranges from individual professional mailboxes to larger business email and collaboration products, including Hosted Exchange and Microsoft 365. Customers who only require a business email address and domain do not need to purchase a complete website-hosting package.

The Website Builder targets customers who prefer a managed visual environment instead of conventional hosting or WordPress. AI-assisted site creation, templates and integrated business functions simplify the process of building and maintaining a website. IONOS also provides professional website-design services, e-commerce solutions and digital-marketing tools.

During 2026, the company expanded its AI-oriented portfolio with AI App & Site Builder, allowing websites and applications to be created from natural-language instructions. HiDrive Next also became the newer generation of its cloud-storage platform, using Nextcloud technology for file storage and collaboration.

IONOS continues to develop both its consumer and enterprise infrastructure products. New server hardware, cloud technologies, AI services and application-building tools have made its current portfolio significantly broader than the traditional 1&1 hosting business.
