Hostnet is a long-running Dutch hosting provider based in Amsterdam, active since 1999 and founded by Harold Douwes. Over more than two decades they have grown from a small student start-up into one of the largest shared hosting and domain providers in the Netherlands, serving well over two hundred thousand customers and employing a mid-sized in-house team. Since 2020 they have been part of the larger European group.ONE family (around one.com), but the Hostnet brand continues to operate with its own product line and support organization.

The portfolio is broad and clearly aimed at SMEs, freelancers, agencies and technically minded users who want a mix of simplicity and control. At the entry level there are domain services with a wide range of classic TLDs and new gTLDs. Registration and transfer are straightforward, with optional extras around DNS management and forwarding. For many small businesses Hostnet functions as a one-stop shop: domain, web hosting, email and basic online tools are tightly integrated in the same account.

For websites, there are several distinct tracks. Classic web hosting (shared hosting) runs on a fast shared platform with SSD storage, PHP, databases, email accounts and a free Let’s Encrypt Wildcard SSL certificate that is installed and renewed automatically. This is the natural option for small business sites, blogs and simple PHP applications that do not need a dedicated environment. Performance is strengthened by their own in-house cloud platform, automatic backups and an uptime target that is clearly positioned at 99.9%.

Customers who prefer WordPress get additional choices. Standard WordPress Hosting is essentially a WordPress-optimised shared package with automatic installation, a focus on speed, and hosting support seven days per week. Above that sits WP.one (Managed WordPress Cloud), a fully managed WordPress platform running on Google Cloud infrastructure. WP.one packages include dedicated resources (vCPUs and RAM per site), daily backups, a staging environment, HTTP/2 and HTTP/3, integrated caching via WP Rocket, automated WordPress and plugin updates and continuous uptime/vulnerability monitoring. This track targets busier shops and business sites that want WordPress-specialist support and 24/7 monitoring without in-house sysadmin effort.

For projects that grow beyond shared hosting, Hostnet offers Performance Hosting and VPS Hosting. Performance Hosting effectively gives a Managed VPS behind a friendlier product label: dedicated resources, WP Toolkit, staging, monitoring and management, aimed at agencies and webshops that are hitting the ceiling of shared hosting. The VPS line splits into Unmanaged VPS (for users who want full root access and manage the OS themselves) and Managed VPS (for customers who want Hostnet’s engineers to take care of OS updates, security, monitoring and in many cases Plesk configuration). There is also a specific VPS with Plesk track for users who want a familiar control panel on top of a virtual server without building everything from scratch.

Beyond pure hosting, Hostnet provides email and collaboration products. Their E-mail Hosting plans let customers run mail on their own domain with a full webmail suite (Hostnet App Suite), address book, calendar and mobile access. For organisations that rely on Microsoft’s ecosystem, Hostnet also sells Microsoft 365 subscriptions bundled with domain and DNS management. In both cases the aim is to give small businesses a professional mail and collaboration environment without having to think about low-level mail server administration.

Security and online presence are strengthened via SSL certificates (Standard, Wildcard and EV SSL on top of the free Let’s Encrypt Wildcard), backup services, and third-party tools such as Marketgoo for SEO. On the website side they also promote Website Maker and Webshop Maker for users who prefer a drag-and-drop builder, plus a "Website laten maken" service where Hostnet’s own team creates and maintains a professional site on behalf of the customer.
Overall, Hostnet is a mature, full-service Dutch host: mass-market shared hosting and domains at the front, but with credible managed WordPress and VPS options behind it for customers who outgrow the basics. The integration with group.ONE gives some extra corporate backing without changing the fact that day-to-day operations are handled by Hostnet’s own staff in Amsterdam.
