Fastly Managed CDN delivered on a private network Fastly delivers its edge cloud capabilities through a Managed CDN (mCDN) model that emphasizes control, flexibility, and deployment within a customer’s own infrastructure. Under this approach, Fastly’s edge hardware and software are integrated into environments and locations selected by the customer, effectively extending the edge cloud into a private network footprint.
Key benefits Enhanced performance and predictability Fastly’s Managed CDN brings its service capabilities directly into the customer’s network, which can mitigate storage limitations, reduce origin load, and improve mobile performance. Because content is stored and maintained on dedicated servers, they can achieve greater predictability in origin traffic patterns.
Dependable expertise and support Customers benefit from routine monitoring and maintenance, supported by operational expertise and standard service support, with the goal of ensuring the network continues to function efficiently over time.
Maximum flexibility The Managed CDN becomes part of the customer’s network infrastructure while preserving architectural flexibility. Fastly’s team collaborates with the customer to design and support an architecture aligned to business requirements, including decisions around POP locations and capacity allocation tailored to traffic needs.
Cost efficiency By leveraging existing transit and peering relationships, customers may reduce bandwidth costs relative to relying exclusively on public internet paths. Higher cache hit ratios—supported by reduced origin load and reserved POP capacity—can enable sustained peak traffic delivery with fewer servers or virtual instances.
Deployment and plan characteristics Intelligent POP placement Managed CDN subscribers can deploy Fastly delivery services across a private network while utilizing existing infrastructure and strategically selected POPs. Fastly works with the customer’s infrastructure teams to design a custom implementation, defining the number, capacity, and placement of managed POPs.
Access to edge cloud features Managed CDNs are built using the same underlying technology, monitoring practices, and operational tooling as Fastly’s multi-tenant edge cloud platform. As a result, customers can benefit from ongoing feature updates, security improvements, and performance enhancements.
Upgraded security protocol Under an mCDN, POP capacity is exclusive to the customer, supporting privacy and control. Because Fastly operates within the customer’s network, existing organizational security measures and policies can be applied to the mCDN environment. TLS connections—including support for HTTP/2 and IPv6—are terminated at edge POPs, which can further reduce origin load. Customers may obtain TLS certificates independently or through Fastly.
Package requirements and usage limitations These Network Services packages are designed for web pages (including HTML) and web APIs, and are not intended for streaming services. In addition, no more than 10% of traffic may originate from the African, Indian, or South Korean billing regions.
📄 Editorial Review
Fastly is an edge cloud and CDN provider founded in 2011 by Artur Bergman, headquartered in San Francisco and grown into a mid-sized, publicly traded infrastructure company with around a thousand employees. Rather than offering classic shared or VPS hosting, they focus on delivering and securing web content and applications from the edge, targeting engineering-driven organizations that need performance, programmability, and deep real-time visibility.
At the core of the platform is Fastly’s Content Delivery Network (Full Site Delivery). Traffic is routed through a global network of high-density points of presence (POPs) located at major internet exchange points worldwide. The CDN accelerates static and dynamic sites, APIs, and media delivery, with fast cache purging, HTTP/3 support, TLS offload, and fine-grained cache controls. The platform is built around Varnish-style configuration and a highly programmable edge layer, which appeals to teams that want to tune behavior rather than rely on a black-box CDN.
On top of the CDN, Fastly has expanded into a broader edge cloud platform. Key product families include:
Network Services: Full-site delivery, load balancing, origin shielding, media streaming tools (Media Shield, On-the-Fly Packager), and Image Optimization for on-the-fly resizing and format conversion.
Security Services: DDoS protection, Next-Gen WAF (Signal Sciences technology), bot mitigation features, TLS management (including managed certificates and mutual TLS), and client-side protection. Security is integrated, not bolted on, which makes the platform attractive for high-traffic sites with serious risk exposure.
Compute at the edge: Serverless edge computing for deploying code globally without managing servers, plus complementary services such as fan-out / WebSockets for real-time experiences and AI-focused features like the AI Accelerator with semantic caching for LLM-based workloads.
Observability and data: Logging endpoints, Edge Observer, Domain and Origin Inspector, custom dashboards, and object storage and key-value storage at the edge. This gives teams detailed insight into traffic, errors, and performance, often in real time.
Fastly is not a traditional hosting provider (you do not rent shared cPanel accounts, VPSes, or classic dedicated servers). Instead, it sits in front of existing infrastructure, accelerating and securing applications that may live in public clouds, on-premises data centers, or other hosting environments. This makes the platform particularly suitable for technology-driven companies, SaaS vendors, media and streaming platforms, and e-commerce or API providers that are comfortable with a more technical, configuration-driven service rather than a simple plug-and-play host.
