📄 Editorial Review
EarthLink is a long-established American internet and communications company founded in 1994 by entrepreneur Sky Dayton in Pasadena, California. It became one of the best-known dial-up internet providers in the United States before developing into a broader supplier of residential broadband, business connectivity, managed IT, cybersecurity, cloud voice and digital services.EarthLink merged with MindSpring in 2000, creating one of the largest independent internet service providers of that period. Its business later went through several ownership and structural changes, including an acquisition by Trive Capital at the end of 2018. The company entered 2019 with more than 600,000 customers and began another phase of expansion focused on fiber, fixed wireless and business communications.
The 2023 acquisition of One Ring Networks added a national network backbone and business connectivity operations in Arizona, California, Georgia, Maryland and Texas. Telegia expanded EarthLink’s fixed-wireless coverage in Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia, while QX.net strengthened its presence in Kentucky. BroadAspect added further East Coast infrastructure, and Nextera Communications extended the business network into Minnesota.
EarthLink had approximately 750,000 residential and business customers when the One Ring Networks transaction was completed. Its workforce is within the 201–500 employee range. These acquisitions transformed the company from a traditional consumer internet provider into a more diversified connectivity and managed-services organization.
Residential customers can choose between fiber internet, fixed wireless home internet, satellite internet and rural connectivity, depending on service availability at their address. Fiber is the most capable residential option, with symmetrical upload and download speeds, unlimited data and packages reaching as high as 5 Gbps in supported areas.
Exact speeds, installation conditions and plan availability depend on the local access network. EarthLink often supplies residential internet through infrastructure available in each region, while retaining responsibility for sales, billing and customer service.
Wireless Home Internet uses 4G LTE and 5G networks and can reach estimated maximum speeds of approximately 425 Mbps under favorable conditions. It operates on a month-to-month basis, does not require a credit check and does not impose traditional data-overage fees. A leased router is required, and the connection is intended for use at the registered service address.
Actual wireless performance depends on local coverage, network congestion, signal strength, nearby buildings and indoor placement of the router. It is a useful alternative for properties without suitable wired broadband, although it cannot provide the same consistency as a strong fiber connection.
Satellite internet is supplied through Viasat and is primarily intended for rural areas where fiber, cable or reliable 5G coverage is unavailable. Speeds can reach 100 Mbps, but the available equipment, contract terms, data allowances and installation costs vary by location and package. Professional installation of the satellite equipment is generally required.
EarthLink Business has a considerably broader portfolio. Services include business broadband, dedicated fiber, fixed wireless, emergency internet, wholesale connectivity, managed IT, cloud voice, cybersecurity, digital marketing and website development.
Dedicated fiber delivers symmetrical business bandwidth for companies that require stable capacity for cloud applications, remote work, communications and data transfers. Business fixed wireless can provide symmetrical connections reaching up to 10 Gbps through a direct line-of-sight radio link between the customer’s premises and a nearby EarthLink point of presence.
Emergency Internet serves as a secondary connection for organizations that cannot tolerate a complete service interruption. It can keep payment systems, cloud applications, voice services, remote access and other essential operations available when the primary wired circuit fails.
Managed IT services cover 24/7 monitoring, network management, endpoint protection, email security, mobile-device management, hardware support, backup, disaster recovery, cloud applications, Microsoft 365, VoIP and virtual server hosting. Virtual servers are supplied as part of a managed business solution rather than through a conventional self-service VPS catalog.
EarthLink continues to provide web hosting through its website-development and digital-marketing services. The professionally built website range includes Standard and Premium packages, while the self-service range includes Website Plus, Business Website Plus and eCommerce Website Plus.
These packages can include responsive website design, copywriting, secure hosting, domain registration, branded email, SSL protection, contact forms, website analytics, search-engine optimization, maintenance and email marketing. Professional website packages normally include five or ten designed pages, depending on the selected level. The e-commerce package adds online-store functionality for businesses selling products or services.
EarthLink is not a conventional shared-hosting specialist. It does not maintain a prominent public catalog of standalone Linux or Windows shared hosting, reseller hosting, unmanaged VPS or dedicated servers. Its hosting services are better suited to small businesses that want website creation, hosting, domain registration, email and maintenance combined under one account.
Developers requiring root access, selectable operating systems, container hosting, detailed server configurations or advanced deployment tools will find the service too restrictive. EarthLink’s website products are oriented toward managed business use rather than technically advanced hosting environments.
Security is another important part of the portfolio. EarthLink Protect and Protect+ use Norton technology for antivirus protection, VPN access, dark-web monitoring and identity-related features. EarthLink Online Backup provides encrypted cloud storage, while EasyTech offers remote technical assistance for computers, smartphones, tablets, printers, home networks and connected devices.
The website has a modern and responsive design that works properly on desktop and mobile screens. The primary sales and support experience is in English, while some legal documents are also available in Spanish. Services are priced in U.S. dollars.
