cyon is an independent Swiss web hosting and domain provider headquartered in Basel. David Burkardt and Tobias Byland founded the company on February 1, 2003, initially to finance their chemistry studies. Burkardt left university during the first year to concentrate fully on the business and continues to lead cyon as founder and CEO.

The company has developed from a small hosting project with one server into an established provider with 42 employees. By the end of 2025, cyon served 49,561 customers, 110,347 websites, 181,611 email accounts and 169,667 domains. It remains privately owned and independent from the international hosting groups that have acquired several other providers in Switzerland.

Its portfolio includes Linux web hosting, high-performance shared hosting, managed servers, agency and reseller hosting, WordPress hosting, domain registration, domain transfers, SSL certificates, email hosting, website migration and a hosted website builder. There are no conventional unmanaged VPS plans, Windows hosting packages, root-access cloud servers or separately sold bare-metal servers. The service is better suited to customers who prefer a managed environment rather than direct operating-system administration.

The standard Webhosting range consists of Single, Double and Triple packages. Single includes 250 GB of SSD storage, one GB of RAM, ten MariaDB databases and ten domain slots. Double increases the allocation to 500 GB, two GB of RAM, 50 databases and 50 domains. Triple provides 1,000 GB of storage, three GB of RAM, 100 databases and unrestricted domain slots. Compute capacity also increases progressively across the three plans.

Email hosting is included with all regular hosting packages. Customers can create unlimited email addresses, forwarding rules, autoresponders and filters, while webmail and spam protection are included. Standard email protocols allow the accounts to work with common desktop and mobile applications without requiring proprietary software.

The shared platform uses LiteSpeed, HTTP/3, QUIC, Brotli compression, gzip compression, OPcache and SSD storage connected through NVMe. Developers receive SSH access, Git, npm, configurable PHP versions, individual PHP settings for directories and several preinstalled command-line utilities.

WordPress, Joomla, PrestaShop and more than 30 additional applications can be installed through the application manager. Staging environments, automated application updates and backups stored on separate systems are also available.

Webhosting Pro is intended for online stores, larger content-management systems and demanding PHP applications. Single includes 1,000 GB of storage, 200% compute capacity, four GB of RAM and an outgoing limit of 3,000 emails per hour. Double increases compute capacity to 400% and RAM to six GB, while Triple provides 600% compute capacity, eight GB of RAM and an hourly limit of 4,000 outgoing emails. Triple also includes one emergency-support request per year. Priority Support is included with all Webhosting Pro packages.

The Managed Server range provides exclusive server resources without requiring customers to administer the operating system. Single includes eight CPU cores, 16 GB of RAM and 1,000 GB of SSD storage. Double provides 16 cores and 32 GB of RAM, while Triple includes 32 cores and 64 GB of RAM.

Managed Server is suitable for high-traffic websites, business applications and larger online stores that need isolated resources. Root access is not included, since cyon manages the operating system, updates, monitoring and underlying server environment. OPcache, APCu, optimized PHP configurations, caching and Priority Support are included.

The Agencyserver is designed for agencies, web designers and resellers managing several customer accounts. Each customer can receive an isolated hosting account with individually assigned storage, databases, domains and other resources. Agencies can create their own packages, define resale prices and delegate access through separate my.cyon accounts.

Agencyserver also allows an agency to replace cyon’s support information with its own support address and help link. A common server directory can be used to share application code or command-line utilities between customer accounts. This arrangement is practical for agencies that maintain many similar WordPress or development projects.

WordPress hosting runs on the regular Webhosting and Webhosting Pro infrastructure rather than on a restrictive WordPress-only platform. It includes one-click installation, unrestricted theme and plugin access, editable PHP settings, staging, LiteSpeed Cache, automated updates, free SSL and one complimentary WordPress migration. FTP, SSH and direct code access remain available.

The Sitebuilder provides a simpler option for beginners and small businesses. It includes responsive templates, a browser-based drag-and-drop editor, slideshows, video elements, text tools and basic search-engine settings. Customers can build a regular website, blog or online shop.

The shop component supports physical and downloadable products, product variants, inventory management, filters, worldwide shipping and several checkout options. Hosting and email are included with the Sitebuilder subscription.

Domain services cover more than 430 extensions. Management tools include real-time registration, domain transfers, configurable nameservers, DNS templates, a full DNS editor, contact management, DNSSEC functions and a detailed change history.

Free SSL certificates are included for hosted domains and renew automatically. The SSL environment supports TLS 1.3, automatic key rotation, SHA-256 signatures, forward secrecy, modern mobile ciphers and certificates covering both www and non-www hostnames.

Migration assistance is one of cyon’s practical advantages. A new hosting order includes the transfer of one website and three email accounts. The remaining prepaid period at the previous provider can be credited for up to 12 months, reducing the cost of overlapping hosting contracts.

Security measures include a web application firewall, DDoS mitigation, malware scanning, quarantine tools, automatic patching for recognized CMS vulnerabilities, intrusion detection, two-factor authentication, live kernel patching and resource isolation between hosting accounts.

Backups are created daily and are normally retained for up to two weeks. Copies are stored on separate systems in different fire-protection zones. Customers should still maintain independent backups of business-critical websites and email accounts.

The website has a clean, modern and mobile-friendly design. The website, customer interface and knowledge base are primarily in German, and no complete English-language version exists.
