📄 Editorial Review
Cronon GmbH is a German managed cloud, hosting, and IT infrastructure provider founded in 2000 by STRATO. The company is headquartered in Berlin and also maintains operations in Karlsruhe. Cronon became part of the United Internet group following the acquisition of STRATO in 2017 and now operates within the wider IONOS Group structure.Cronon is primarily an enterprise infrastructure provider rather than a conventional retail web host. Its services are suited to medium-sized companies, public-sector organizations, associations, software developers, and larger enterprises that require individually designed infrastructure, managed operations, German data residency, and direct access to experienced technical teams.
The company combines expertise in cloud architecture, networking, cybersecurity, databases, virtualization, storage, and managed application environments. Customers can use Cronon throughout the complete infrastructure lifecycle, including initial consulting, architecture planning, migration, deployment, monitoring, maintenance, security management, performance optimization, backup, and disaster recovery.
Its main services include Dedicated Server Hosting, Managed Hosting, Managed Business Cloud, Managed Private Cloud, public cloud integration, Container as a Service, Object Storage, Cloud Archive, Colocation, managed databases, managed security, backup services, site connectivity, and cloud migration consulting.
Dedicated hosting is based on customized HPE ProLiant server hardware. Processor type, memory, SSD or HDD storage, RAID configuration, operating system, network connectivity, and management responsibilities can be adapted to each project. Supported platforms include Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Windows Server, and VMware vSphere. Customers can also use their own operating-system images when required.
HPE iLO Advanced provides remote hardware administration, including console access, diagnostics, power control, and system monitoring. Redundant network connections and power paths can be incorporated into configurations intended for business-critical workloads.
Managed hosting customers can transfer much of the daily system administration to Cronon. This may include operating-system deployment, security hardening, monitoring, patch management, backups, change management, firewall administration, VPN configuration, DDoS protection, database management, web-server operation, and application-platform maintenance.
More complex environments can include server clusters, load balancing, database replication, geographically separated systems, and disaster-recovery infrastructure. These options make Cronon suitable for applications that cannot depend on a single server or one physical location.
The Managed Business Cloud is a virtual private cloud environment based on VMware technology. It combines VMware vSphere and vCloud Director with all-flash NetApp storage, software-defined networking, firewall and NAT management, micro-segmentation, backup services, and optional S3-compatible object storage.
This platform is appropriate for organizations that need scalable virtual infrastructure without managing the underlying virtualization layer themselves. Virtual machines, storage, networking, templates, security rules, and resource allocation can be administered through the VMware management environment.
The Managed Private Cloud provides dedicated ESXi hosts within an isolated VMware environment managed through vCenter. Processing power, memory, storage, network architecture, security, and availability are customized for each customer.
Critical private cloud installations can be distributed across separate fire compartments or geographically separated data center locations. Stretched networks, replicated storage, backup systems, and redundant connectivity can be incorporated into the architecture.
Cronon also operates a managed Kubernetes Container as a Service platform. The service covers cluster architecture, provisioning, lifecycle management, monitoring, patching, security, user administration, backup, recovery, load balancing, database integration, and CI/CD workflows.
GitLab integration, infrastructure automation, technical workshops, and Kubernetes training are available for development teams migrating from conventional virtual machines to containerized applications.
Object Storage provides an S3-compatible environment for backups, archives, application data, media collections, and large datasets. Storage capacity can scale automatically up to 1 PB, while redundant copies protect data within the Berlin infrastructure.
The service is accessible through a REST API and is compatible with many applications, backup platforms, development frameworks, and storage-management tools that support the S3 protocol.
The Cloud Archive is a managed document-archiving platform hosted on IONOS Cloud infrastructure. It supports more than 500 file formats, metadata management, full-text search, access controls, retention policies, and compliance-oriented document workflows.
The archive incorporates easy archive technology and supports requirements connected with GoBD, IDW PS 880, and ISAE 3000. A 30-day free trial is available for companies that need to evaluate the archive before committing to a paid service.
Managed database services cover MySQL, Percona XtraDB, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Microsoft SQL Server, and Oracle-related environments. Services can include installation, licensing, migration, monitoring, backup, performance optimization, patch management, replication, and highly available database clusters.
MySQL and Percona environments can be distributed between separate fire zones or two Berlin data center locations. Load balancing, database replication, and master-master configurations are available for applications requiring increased resilience.
Managed security services include physical and virtual firewalls, VPN connections, network segmentation, web application firewalls, DDoS protection, security monitoring, and policy administration.
DDoS mitigation is delivered with Link11 (link11.com), with automated detection and mitigation capacity reaching 1 Tbps for suitable configurations.
Cronon’s domain-registration activity has largely been transferred to another company within the IONOS Group. Existing domains registered through Cronon continue to receive support through domain@cronon, although domain registration is no longer one of the company’s primary public product lines.
The website is available in German, and the company’s commercial and technical communication is mainly oriented toward German-speaking business customers. Its modern layout works well on both desktop and mobile screens.
