📄 Editorial Review

Canaletto Internet GmbH is a German Internet, hosting and IT infrastructure company based in Dresden, Saxony, with operations dating back to 1993. More than three decades in the market have resulted in a broad combination of web hosting, server infrastructure, data-center services, Internet connectivity and business IT solutions. The company belongs to the PRODATIS Group and is managed by Jan Riedel. Its legal registration is AG Dresden HRB 25721, with German VAT ID DE254463697.

Canaletto is much more than a conventional shared-hosting provider. Its portfolio covers Linux Hosting, Windows Hosting, Domains, Root Servers, Virtual Servers, Colocation / Server Housing, Reseller Hosting, SSL Certificates, VPN services and business connectivity. Additional services include application hosting, document management, databases, software development, web design and specialized business IT projects. Exchange hosting, TYPO3 hosting, Internet access, leased lines and several other solutions have also formed part of its wider service range.

A major strength is its own data-center infrastructure in Dresden, Germany. This allows Canaletto to combine conventional website hosting with dedicated infrastructure, customer-owned colocated equipment, managed servers and specialized application environments. Customers that require more control can use individually configured root servers, while companies preferring managed infrastructure can hand over server administration and application operation to Canaletto.

The dedicated-server environment supports Linux, Solaris and Microsoft Windows Server systems. Hardware can be expanded according to individual requirements, and customized Service Level Agreements are available for business-critical deployments. Root-server customers also receive hardware replacement in the event of equipment failure and can add administrative and management services when required.

Shared hosting is available for both Linux and Windows environments. Linux Webserver Visitenkarte 5.0 is the entry package, with 100 MB storage, one .de domain, 5 GB traffic and five configurable email addresses. Linux Webserver Perfekt 5.0 increases resources to 1 GB storage, 50 GB monthly traffic, five applications and five MySQL databases, while Linux Webserver Start 5.0 offers 2 GB storage, 70 GB traffic and support for seven applications and databases.

Windows hosting uses Windows Server 2019 and ASP.NET. Windows Webserver Perfekt 5.0 includes 1 GB storage, 50 GB traffic, one .de domain and 15 configurable email addresses. Windows Webserver Start 5.0 increases storage to 2 GB, traffic to 70 GB and provides 35 email addresses together with two MS SQL databases.

The resource allocations are modest compared with many high-volume modern hosting platforms, but Canaletto is focused more on traditional German business hosting, infrastructure management and personal technical support than on selling very large storage quotas at budget prices.

Hosting services include a 99% availability guarantee, continuous data mirroring, German server location and access to round-the-clock technical assistance.

Root servers are available for purchase or rental and can be customized according to application requirements. Managed operation is available for customers that do not want to administer the systems themselves. Hardware replacement, expandable configurations, individual SLAs and 24x7x365 telephone and email support make this service suitable for professional and business workloads. Backup options include data mirroring and tape backup twice daily.

Root-server customers also benefit from a 60-day money-back guarantee, which is considerably longer than the short trial periods commonly associated with server hosting.

Colocation is another important part of Canaletto's infrastructure business. COLO Standard provides one rack unit, while COLO Premium and COLO Business increase the allocation to two and three rack units respectively. The packages include an IP address, electricity allowance, UPS protection, emergency power generation and Argon fire suppression. PC systems and specialized hardware can also be accommodated when a conventional rack-server format is not suitable.

Resellers have access to Reseller Server Start 4.0, Classic 4.0 and Business 4.0. These packages support between 25 and 100 customer accounts and combine Linux hosting, MySQL databases, storage and traffic allocations. Canaletto can maintain the underlying infrastructure while the reseller concentrates on customer management and sales. Customized Linux, Solaris and Windows systems, virtualization and application management are also possible. Reseller server services include the same 60-day satisfaction guarantee together with mirroring and twice-daily tape backup.

Domain registration covers a broad selection of country-code and generic extensions, including .de, .com, .net, .org, .eu and numerous European and newer generic TLDs. Incoming domain transfers are supported together with the necessary registrant verification and administration.

SSL certificates are available for websites and other encrypted services. Canaletto works with GlobalSign certificates and supports domain-validated, organization-validated and EV certificates. Some domains managed directly through Canaletto can receive SSL without a recurring annual certificate charge, although installation or provisioning fees can apply. Personal certificates for encrypted and digitally signed email are also available.

The networking portfolio extends beyond ordinary hosting. VPN solutions can securely connect separate offices, local networks and mobile employees through private Intranet and Extranet environments. Private RFC 1918 addressing is supported, while the underlying network uses redundant infrastructure and private tunneling separated from ordinary public Internet traffic. Network management is available continuously.

Business connectivity has also included DSL/SDSL, leased lines and related Internet-access services, making Canaletto particularly relevant to organizations that prefer to combine hosting, connectivity and infrastructure management with one provider.

Canaletto also operates eloCLOUD DMS, an enterprise document-management and content-management environment covering document storage, email archiving and workflow management. Primary and secondary backup systems protect the stored information, with optional tape copies that can be kept away from the main server environment. SSL and VPN connections can be used for secure access.

Custom software development is another part of the company's technical portfolio. Projects can include web applications, standalone business software, mobile data collection and specialized user interfaces. Database experience covers Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server and MySQL, while Microsoft .NET technologies are also used for customized application development.

Canaletto primarily serves the German-speaking market. The company website and contractual environment are in German, and services are priced in EUR. No complete multi-language/localized version exists.

The company website retains an older design and traditional navigation structure, with some ASP-based and legacy service areas still accessible. It contains considerable technical information, but the overall interface is noticeably less modern than the streamlined cloud dashboards and responsive ordering environments used by newer hosting companies.
