📄 Editorial Review
A1 Internet is a Dutch Internet, hosting and telecommunications provider based in Heerenveen, Friesland, with roots going back to 1992. Its Internet history predates the modern commercial hosting market, while domain registration and website and email hosting became part of the business in 1994. Over the years, the company expanded from Internet access and hosting into business connectivity, VoIP, hosted telephony, online workplaces, cloud storage and virtualized infrastructure. The current portfolio covers Shared Web Hosting, Domain Registration, VMware Virtual Servers, Colocation, Cloud Storage, Hosted Exchange, Anti-Spam and Antivirus services, business Internet connectivity, fiber connections and reseller services. Telecommunications form another substantial part of the operation, including hosted telephony, SIP trunks, SIMPBX and Microsoft Teams integration.
The Shared Web Hosting range is divided into Start, Plus, Pro and Premium packages. Start provides 300 MB disk space, 5 GB traffic, five mailboxes and two subdomains. Plus increases capacity to 500 MB storage, 10 GB traffic, ten mailboxes, eight subdomains and five databases, together with SSL. Pro includes 1 GB storage, 20 GB traffic, 25 mailboxes, ten subdomains and ten databases, while Premium reaches 2 GB storage, 20 GB traffic, 50 mailboxes, 20 subdomains and 20 databases. SSL is included with the higher plans and setup is free.
These hosting allocations are modest by modern standards, particularly the disk-space limits. They are better suited to lightweight business websites, email and relatively small projects than to storage-intensive applications or large WordPress installations.
Domain registration has been part of A1's business for decades. Its domain operation has handled approximately 5,600 domains for around 2,300 customers, covering Dutch and international extensions. Domain customers can combine registration with hosting and WordPress-oriented website services.
Customers needing more server control can use VMware Virtual Servers. The Basic configuration includes 1 GHz processing capacity, 1 GB RAM, 20 GB storage and 100 GB traffic, while Pro increases this to 2 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 50 GB storage and 250 GB traffic. Both include a 100 Mbps network connection, remote reboot facilities, traffic statistics and administrative Root or Administrator access.
The VMware platform includes vCenter access, DRS, High Availability and VMotion, with Fault Tolerance available as an additional option. VMware Enterprise Plus licensing is incorporated into the virtualization environment. Additional services include proactive operating-system and middleware patching, daily off-site backups, monitoring and fully managed administration. Hardware-related emergency support is available around the clock.
Colocation accommodates deployments ranging from a single 1U server to larger rack and compartment requirements. Standard connectivity includes a 100 Mbps uplink, remote power functionality, five IPv4 addresses, native IPv6, traffic monitoring, DNS service and fallback mail servers. Traffic packages include 250 GB, 750 GB and 1,500 GB allocations. Colocation customers also receive 24×7×365 facility access and an emergency contact facility.
A1 also operates domain-level Anti-Spam and Antivirus filtering. Email is filtered before reaching individual mailboxes, while quarantine, blocked messages and filtering preferences can be handled through a web interface.
The Cloud Harddrive service provides centrally stored business files with shared folders, personal directories, file versioning, deleted-file recovery, offline synchronization, remote wipe and external file sharing. Multiple copies of customer data are maintained across Dutch infrastructure locations.
Microsoft-oriented business customers can also use Hosted Exchange services with Outlook integration, mobile access, spam filtering and malware protection. A1 additionally combines hosting and cloud services with business Internet connectivity and fiber connections, which can simplify infrastructure management for organizations wanting a single supplier for hosting, connectivity and telecommunications.
Resellers have access to white-label services and a management portal. The reseller environment supports management of customers and services and can also generate customer invoices using the reseller's own identity. This side of the business is particularly useful for IT companies and telecom partners that prefer to deliver A1 infrastructure under their own brand.
The company is primarily focused on the Dutch market and operates in Dutch. No multi-language/localized website version exists, which makes the service less convenient for international customers who require English documentation and ordering.
