Dec, 2003 : C&W Expresses Support for Web Site Labeling
📅 - Telecommunications carrier Cable & Wireless (cw.com) said today that it is furthering its commitment to the Internet Content Rating Association (ICRA). C&W announced its intentions to help the ICRA further develop its content labeling system and promote such labeling around the world.
"Support from Cable & Wireless is a huge boost to our efforts to encourage content providers to label their Web sites to help parents to protect their children from potentially harmful material," said Stephen Balkam, CEO of ICRA.
C&W said it is committed to the promotion of Web site labeling as a mainstream practice.
"Cable & Wireless believes that Web site labeling is increasingly regarded as industry best practice among content providers," said Gareth James, managing director of UK corporate markets for Cable & Wireless. "As part of our commitment to Internet safety, we recommend that our Internet-based customers label their Web sites and we encourage our partners in the industry to support content labeling and the work of ICRA."
According to C&W, ICRA has developed a system that allows Web site owners to label the nature of the material available on their Web sites. The labels are not visible to users, but are read by content filtering solutions such as ICRA's solution ICRAplus.
ICRA logo buttons are available for Web site owners that wish to demonstrate visibly that their site has been labeled.
ICRA is a non-profit organization that aims to protect children from harmful material on the Internet while preserving the right to free speech.
Cable & Wireless announced yesterday that it had sold its US hosting division.
