Feb 4, 2004 : Port 80 Releases Web Server Survey
📅 - Microsoft IIS software developer Port 80 Software (port80software.com) announced on Wednesday that it has released a new Web server survey that determines the operating systems running on the Web servers of the top 1000 most heavily trafficked sites on the Internet.
The top 1000 Web sites used in Port 80's survey are based on data compiled by Nielson/Netratings.
According to the survey, 43.1 percent of the top 1000 sites based on traffic run on the Microsoft IIS platform while 39.7 percent run on Apache.
The results stand in contrast to Netcraft's (netcraft.com) most recent Web server survey, which found Apache to hold 67.38 of the total Web server market and Microsoft at 21.00 percent. Netcraft uses "all Internet connected computers" as its data sample.
Port 80 said its survey challenges the relevance of the Netcraft survey for business decisions makers. Netcraft's monthly Web server survey is popular throughout the Web hosting industry and taken by many to be the definitive representation of Web server market share.
"Netcraft canvases millions of sites, while Port80 focuses on select samples of high traffic and US Fortune 1000 sites," said Joseph Lima, COO of Port80 Software. "Each survey provides a different picture of the Web server market and, while there is no definitive answer, many critics suggested that a sample of the highest traffic sites would make for a more enlightening survey. We hope that this high traffic survey adds a significant new perspective to the debate."
Port 80 said it is planning to run monthly surveys of the top 1000 mostly trafficked Web sites.
Prior to today's announcement, Port 80 published a Web server survey using the Fortune 1000 as its data sample. According to that survey, 53.6 percent of the sites ran on Microsoft platforms and 18.9 percent ran on Apache.
