Jul 31, 2007 : Microsoft Breaks Ground on Facility

📅 - Microsoft (microsoft.com) announced on Monday it broke ground on its San Antonio, Texas data center after two years of negotiations and a six month waiting period.

The massive center, which began construction in April, is one of about six data centers around the world. The data center will be approximately 450,000 square feet and will require a staff of 75 to maintain. San Antonio residents also hope that other IT companies will elect to do business there.

"The city offered many advantages, one of the most vital being affordable, ample power," says Debra Chrapaty, corporate vice president for global foundation services at Microsoft. "Today's groundbreaking brings us one step closer to our goal of seeing thousands of servers in our San Antonio data center delivering online services to customers worldwide."

Microsoft's new data center will house tens of thousands of servers. The company says the facility, which is expected to open July 2008, will cost nearly a billion dollars.

The company announced at HostingCon 2007 last week its comprehensive strategy for enabling hosting providers to be successful in the world of software plus services.
