Feb 19, 2004 : Canadian ISPs Oppose Record Industry

📅 - Two ISPs in Saskatchewan say that if they are asked, they will refuse to hand over to the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) contact information for customers suspected of uploading music files on the Net.

SaskTel (sasktel.com) and Access Communications (accesscomm.ca), the two largest ISPs in Canada's prairie province, are not involved in any legal battles, but company officials have told the media that they won't give into pressure from the CRIA. ISP officials said that handing over that information would violate customer privacy policies and federal privacy legislation as well.
The Saskatchewan-based ISPs have spoken out against the CRIA even though they have yet to be asked for their cooperation. Earlier this week, the CRIA made an application to the Federal Court of Canada to make Canada's five largest ISPs identify customers distributing songs on the Internet. SaskTel and Access Communications were not named on that application.
The CRIA is working on behalf of major record labels and is reportedly looking for 29 Canadian customers from at least five large ISPs. It has tracked file-sharing activities to IP addresses, but needs ISPs to help it connect those numbers to actual people.
The CRIA has not yet made any formal requests for customer information. It is scheduled to re-appear in a Toronto court on March 12.
