Feb 27, 2004 : AT&T to Conduct Disaster Recovery Drill
📅 - AT&T (att.com) announced on Thursday that it will conduct a six-day disaster recovery drill in Seattle, Washington beginning today. The company said the drill is designed to test and evaluate how well it can respond to a simulated disaster that "destroys" a data-routing or voice-switching center in the Seattle area. According to AT&T, it uses the exercise to ensure that it can restore voice and data communications services for its consumer, enterprise and government customers within 72 hours of a disaster that damages or brings down parts of its network.
"The scope and scale of AT&T's NDR drill is unique in the industry," says Vicky Santangelo, vice president of sales for AT&T Seattle. "But the investment we're making helps ensure our people and our network can provide the availability, recoverability and security of our customers' services, applications and data - even in the event of a major disaster."
AT&T said that in the past 10 years, the company has invested more than $300 million in its network disaster recovery program, which includes a team of more than 100 managers, engineers and technicians. The program also includes a fleet of more than 150 self-contained equipment trailers and support vehicles that house the same equipment and components that are found in AT&T data-routing or voice-switching centers. AT&T said its network disaster recovery program includes the industry's only mobile network disaster recovery team.
Today's drill, conducted several times a year, comes on the anniversary of a 6.8 magnitude earthquake that hit the Seattle area three years ago.
According to AT&T, since 1990, the network disaster recovery team has been activated 12 times in response to disasters.
