Mar 1, 2004 : Netsky, Bagle Viruses Spreading

📅 - The most recent variant of the Netsky virus, NetSky.d, emerged on Monday and is scheduled to "beep from the speakers of infected computers" on March 2, while carrying out the sending of mass emails, according to a report by mi2g (mi2g.net) Intelligence Unit, a digital risk firm.

According to estimates made by mi2g, the Netsky family of viruses, which only affects computers running Windows, has now reached the eighth position in mi2g's ranking of the most damaging viruses ever. The total amount of damage wrought by the Netsky family is estimated by the firm to be between $6.7 and $8.2 billion.
Mi2g says it calculates economic damage on the basis of helpdesk support costs, overtime payments, contingency outsourcing, loss of business, bandwidth clogging, productivity erosion, management time reallocation, cost of recovery and software upgrades.
Meanwhile, various variants of the Bagle virus have emerged since late last week, according to reports by mi2g and Central Command (centralcommand.com), an anti-virus software developer. The Bagle virus is propogated by a Zip file attached in an email and is designed to bypass anti-virus software.
