May 3, 2004 : Traffic Surge Slows Down SEC Web Site
📅 - Google's (google.com) filing for an initial public offering (IPO) with the US Securities and Exchange Commission last Thursday created an upsurge of traffic that slowed the performance of the SEC Web site (sec.gov), according to data released by Keynote Systems.
Keynote's data showed that between 2:30 and 3:30 eastern time last Thursday, the SEC home page took up to 45 seconds to load. The SEC's home page typically loads in approximately 4 seconds. During this hour, the success rate for downloading the home page dropped to 20 percent, significantly lower than the normal rate of 100 percent. "Government sites are very good about success rates so this is definitely somewhat of an anomaly, says Roopak Patel, senior Internet analyst for Keynote Systems. "Clearly, there is great interest in something newsworthy on the site - most likely Google's IPO filing." Keynote tracks the SEC's Web site as part of the Keynote E-Government Web Transaction Performance Index, launched earlier this year.

The IPO of Mountain View, California-based Google is widely expected to be the largest ever for an Internet company. Rumors of a Google IPO have been circulating since October of last year. Reports at the time indicated that Google was considering an online auction, allowing investors to bid for Google's shares directly. This lies in contrast to the common practice of leaving the investment bank to decide on the price of the shares and who should receive them. Reports say that Google will
