Jun 10, 2004 : HP to Ship Intel-based 64-bit Blades

📅 - Hewlett-Packard (hp.com) confirmed on Thursday that it is planning to ship blade server systems based on Intel's 64-bit Itanium 2 processors, according to a report by IDG News Service.

Sally Stevens, director of marketing for ProLiant platforms at HP, told IDG News Service that the systems would ship in 2005 and use a different chassis from the ProLiant BL systems it is currently shipping.
Intel's Itanium processors are largely considered to consume far too much power to be suitable for use in blade systems. However, Intel is reportedly developing low-voltage chips for use in dual-processor systems.
According to the report, HP plans to ship blade servers with AMD's Opteron 64-bit processor later this year, ahead of the Intel Intanium-based blades.
Pricing and availability of the Itanium and Opteron systems was not available.
