Aug 24, 2004 : Ship Damages Sri Lanka Telecom Cable

📅 - According to a report by the HindustanTimes.com, an Indian ship, "State of Nagaland," that stopped over at the port of Colombo in Sri Lanka is being held there because the vessel allegedly damaged a cable and severed Sri Lanka's connection to the Internet when it docked.

The report said the ship's anchor allegedly damaged the SEA-ME-WE III cable linking Sri Lanka to the Internet backbone.
The ship is being held under a court order until the case, which is being filed by the nation's main telecommunications provider Sri Lanka Telecom (slt.lk), is heard on September 6, 2004. Sri Lanka Telecom is seeking 5 million dollars in damages.
Internet, data and voice services for Sri Lanka Telecom's 800,000 subscribers have been interrupted since August 22. The service is not expected to be back up and running for a few more days.
Research and analysis firm Netcraft (netcraft.com) reported that Sri Lanka's official government site and .lk domain registry were not responding. Sri Lanka Telecom's site is online but responding very slowly, Netcraft said.
