Nov 12, 2004 : New Windows Server Near Completion
📅 - According to reports, Microsoft's (microsoft.com) next Windows Server operating system, code named R2, is well on its way to being finalized, though Microsoft has yet to release a beta version. Packaging, licensing and support details have already been ironed out, reports say.
Microsoft said last month that it would ship R2 in the latter half of 2005. In order to comply with this time frame, Microsoft reportedly cut several features from the product, including network-access protection and file sharing over HTTP. According to reports, R2 will be a relatively minor upgrade from Windows Server 2003, though it will still see the addition of new features and functionality. Reports say Microsoft is not planning to charge its volume-license customers for the product, and will not require new client-access licenses for R2. Microsoft has been quiet concerning details about the new operating system.
