Apr, 2001 : Williams Communications extends service into Europe

📅 April 12, 2001 - Williams Communications, a provider of broadband services for high-bandwidth customers, announced on Thursday that, as part of its ongoing strategy of global expansion, it will begin offering network services to Europe by the end of the second quarter of 2001.

According to the company, its capacity on the TAT-14 trans-Atlantic cable system will be ready for service by mid year. Williams Communications will be able to transport traffic from Europe to its US backbone network via the undersea fiber-optic cable.
Williams Communications connects to the international data gateway at landing points in Manasquan and Tuckerton New Jersey. The company's network has more than 33,000 miles in operation, making it the largest in the United States.
On top of adding to its undersea cable capacity, Williams Communications is looking into the prospect of activating unused fiber in Europe with the help of possible telecommunications partners. Last March, Williams Communications made a deal to acquire dark fiber from Swedish network operator Telia. The deal opened up telecommunications markets across Europe for the US provider.
