Apr 16, 2001 : Red Hat Announces New Linux Version

📅 - On Monday, Red Hat Inc. (http://www.redhat.com), a major developer of the open-source operating system Linux, announced the release of Linux 7.1, incorporating the latest version of the Linux kernel and improved enterprise functionality.
According to Red Hat, the new 2.4 kernel positions the company's version of Linux as an enterprise class operating system by providing improved support for multiprocessor machines, eliminating PCI bus limit, making virtual memory effectively limitless and supporting 64 Gb of physical RAM and a greater number of users and groups.
Along with the new version of the software, the company also introduced Red Hat Network Software Manager, a service designed to deliver bug notices, security alerts, and software updates.
According to Red Hat, the software has been adopted by some of the major players in the industry, including big name computer manufacturers Dell and IBM. Dell says that using a factory install process, it plans to be one of the first major systems manufacturers to ship Red Hat directly to its customers. And IBM says it expects customers to see an overall increase in performance from the new release, to compliment the cost advantages of the operating system.
Red Hat Linux 7.1 is available in packages of increasing cost and comprehensiveness, but each package includes the operating system, installation manual, support and the Red Hat Network.
The software will be available in retail outlets on April 24, but is available immediately from Red Hat's Web site, along with a promotion for a free, and curiously beige, hat.
