Jul 8, 2005 : The webhost industry: week review
📅 - Some of the biggest events in news around the world this week also produced some of the biggest events online, as the long weekend's Live 8 concerts and Deep Impact space mission each drew large crowds of Internet viewers.
On Saturday, AOL's webcast of the Live 8 concerts taking place around the world broke Internet records, attracting an audience of an estimated 5 million users to its free live streaming video coverage. The 5 million visitors came between approximately 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. eastern time, downloading 175,000 video streams simultaneously at the peak of activity.
On Monday, content delivery firms Akamai and eTouch systems delivered streaming footage of the Deep Impact spacecraft mission, planned to coincide with the July 4 holiday. Sonic Foundry captured images of the event. The mission involved a projectile being launched at the Tempel 1 comet from a spacecraft about 83 million miles from earth, while another craft observed the impact. The experiment was intended to reveal information about the contents of a comet.
Real world events had a major online impact in another way this week, as a power outage at the Advance Internet data center disrupted delivery for the company's more than 30 newspaper Web sites. According to Netcraft, the sites switched to text-based publishing during the outage, but were unable to display online ads.
While big mainstream news made for big hosting news this week, other hosting news came from a selection of companies choosing to promote their services by offering them for free.
On Thursday, CrystalTech Web hosting announced its "Summer Spectacular" sale, providing new shared hosting customers with free services for five months. Customers signing up for new plans between July 1 and July 22 will receive five free months of Web hosting after paying for an initial month's fees and a setup fee. CrystalTech says it hopes more people will try the company's hosting services as a result of the promotion.
Also on Thursday, hosting provider Got Web Host announced that it had begun offering the first month free with its basic virtual hosting and SEO virtual hosting packages. The offer, which also waives setup fees on virtual hosting plans, lasts until July 13. Got Web Host says it will honor its previous promotional offering of one free hour of SEO consultation during a customer's first paid month. The company also announced that it would offer its virtual for as low as $10 per month.
And while Web hosts made news by giving services away for free, hosting software developer Sphera hauled in a significant new round of financing.
On Tuesday, it was reported that hosting automation software developer Sphera had arranged a $3 million round of financing from its existing group of investors. That group includes Israeli firms Gemini Israel Funds and Jerusalem Venture Partners, as well as a variety of international investors. Part of the investment deal will see Sphera restructure its staff, which includes 70 employees around the world.
While this week's biggest stories will no doubt have ongoing significance in the mainstream media, their impact on the Web was fleeting, as with each new challenge infrastructure providers strengthen their defenses.
