Stream Intelligent Networks and Bird On A Wire Complete Joint Project

(stream.ca), a metropolitan area network provider delivering managed broadband communications in Toronto, Ontario, and Bird On A Wire Networks, a leading Canadian provider of managed Web hosting services, announced on Thursday that they had successfully completed their first joint project by installing a new high-speed network that the companies say will provide Bird On A Wire with virtually unlimited capacity and increased reliability while significantly reducing costs.
Stream says that while service providers and other high volume data users are forced to wait for additional high-speed fiber-optic services because of prolonged installation methods, Stream was able to install a new Gigabit Ethernet network on Bird On A Wire's schedule. The project was accomplished using a new technology known as STAR, or Sewer Telecommunication Access by Robot, which uses robots to install fiber-optic cable in existing municipal sewer systems.
Bird On A Wire calls the solution offered by stream creative, affordable and extremely timely. The company says that with the Gigabit Ethernet, it can now gradually scale bandwidth as its business demands, rather than making the immediate and expensive jump to OC-3.
Stream says Bird On A Wire was its first customer to take advantage of the unique combination of technologies, and as a result was able to expand its service with the Gigabit Ethernet technology. The company says it has every expectation that in speed, price performance and quality of service, Gigabit Ethernet will be the new standard.
Gigabit Ethernet provides scalable bandwidth from 1 Mbps to 1000 Mbps, and due to the almost universal use of ehternet LANs, the technology also supports the infrastructure and protocols most customers are already using.
