Feb 3, 2006 : AT&T Sued Over 9/11 Client Records

📅 - According to reports released Thursday, AT&T (att.com) is being sued by the Electronic Frontier Foundation in an effort to stop the company from any role it may play in releasing customer information to the US government through surveillance operations undertaken since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

The lawsuit, filed Tuesday by the EFF, alleges that AT&T violated both US law and customer privacy rules by providing National Security Agency agents with phone records and other telecommunications access without court orders.

A New York Times report last month uncovered the surveillance efforts authorized by President Bush in 2001 as part of the government's anti-terrorism efforts. Bush has defended the legality of the surveillance program.

The EFF argues that the program was only made possible because of the illegal cooperation of AT&T and other telecommunications firms. The group says congress has placed strict rules around the privacy of communications, and limits when communications companies can open records to government agencies.

AT&T has said its policy is not to comment on matters involving customer privacy, national security or impending litigation.
