📅 - New Zealand-based Web hosting provider Web Drive (webdrive.co.nz -> openhost.co.nz -> crazydomains.com) announced on Tuesday it had successfully averted a potential phishing scam targeted at National Bank customers after discovering a person from overseas had registered roughly 25 variations of the bank's Web address.
"They used different credit card numbers to register the domains through our automated registration system, so our suspicions were quickly raised," says Web Drive managing director Daniel Williams.
Web Drive immediately cancelled the domains on Sunday morning and re-registered them under its own name to prevent them from being registered elsewhere.
Phishing scams use blanket emailing and authentic-looking content to deceive customers into handing over their private banking details to fraudulent Web sites. The criminals then use the details to transfer funds to another bank account without the user's knowledge.
