📅 May 12, 2006 - Italian domain registrar Register.it (register.it) announced on Thursday that it has become the first Italian operator authorized by mTLD to accept registrations for the new "mobile" domain .mobi.


Starting next week, users can book any name under the new extension .mobi, by filling in the form at Register.it's Web site. The registration procedure will be similar to that of the registration of the .eu domain.

The first sunrise period, called the "Limited Industry Sunrise" period, will take place from May 22 to May 29 and will be restricted to companies belonging to the GSM Association, The Wireless Association, Mobile Marketing Association, The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association, and Mobile Entertainment Forum. Then, from June 12 to August 21, all trademark holders will be authorized to ask for their names under the .mobi extension. Beginning August 28, registrations will go public.

The .mobi domain is the dedicated to spreading Internet content through mobile devices such as mobile phones, palm devices, smart phones, blackberry and pocket PC. The extension will identify Web pages created to be easily accessible from any mobile device.
