May 30, 2006 : DotWorlds Offers Free Addresses
📅 - Unique domain name provider dotWORLDS (dotworlds.net) announced this week that it is providing its service for registering unique and otherwise-unavailable domain names for free. The company is also providing free email and Web hosting for domains registered through its system.
DotWORLDS operates a private network that it calls "a new dimension" being added to the Internet. The company operates a registry of virtual domain names unaffiliated with ICANN and its accredited registries. Through the service, users can register domain names like www.pop.star.
"This is a very exciting development," says Brett Retkin, director of dotWORLDS. "We offer choice in what was an increasingly restricted market. Now, people have the ability to use domain names for what they were intended: a memorable, relevant and fun way for people to find Web sites and content on the Internet. We have already seen communities springing up around some of the free domains that we offer, such as '.music,' and with the freedom to invent Internet addresses they really want, people are turning to these dotWORLDS to express themselves."
While its potential is certainly intriguing, the service currently has several limitations that would seem to hamper its potential as a tool for serious business.
The dotWORLDS domains require site visitors to have the dotWORLDS plugin installed in their browsers. Registered dotWORLDS domains can also be forwarded to existing sites operated by customers.
The company says sites operated under its domains cannot currently be searched by Google spiders, but the company is currently working on a means for Google spiders to access its sites.
