Synergy Research: CAPEX of Hyperscalers Jump to $27 Billion

📅 May 29, 2018 - New Q1 data from Synergy Research Group (srgresearch.com) shows that the CAPEX of hyperscale operators has jumped to $27 billion in the quarter, far surpassing all previous spending levels.

CAPEX would usually fall off in Q1 after a seasonal high in Q4, but this time sequential growth was well over 20% resulting in CAPEX that was 80% higher than the first quarter in 2017. Even allowing for a large one-off item at Google, this would still have easily been a record-breaking quarter, according to Synergy Research. While the relative ranking moves around each quarter, the top-5 group of spenders would always consist of Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Apple and Facebook, which in aggregate account [...][... 📅 May 29, 2018 - #Tencent Opens Mega Data Center Inside Mountain in Guizhou - A data center belonging to Chinese Internet giant and cloud provider Tencent (tencent.com ) began operation yesterday in China's Guizhou province. The core Qixing data center facilities have been deployed inside tunneled caves drilled inside a hill of about 100 meters high.

The new mega data center will include more than 30,000 square meters of tunneled caves, while the total data center area covers about 513,000 square meters. The Qixing data center design would take advantage of the area's chilly weather and create a natural cooling system for the servers inside this facility. Advanced building technologies were used to shorten the construction time, according to Tencent's management.

📅 May 30, 2018 - Iron Mountain Buys Colocation Data Centers EvoSwitch in Amsterdam for €205M - Iron Mountain (ironmountain.com) (NYSE: IRM), the global data storage and information management services company with services including colocation and cloud-based managed services, has acquired EvoSwitch (evoswitch.com)'s two colocation data center sites in the Metropolitan Region Amsterdam (MRA) for €205 ($235) million. Total potential capacity of these two data centers in the Amsterdam area for Iron Mountain is 34MW.
