📅 - In the recent James Andrew Bates homicide case, the court asked to review the data collected by Bates' Amazon Echo device. Amazon refused the request two times, saying it would “not release customer information without a valid and binding legal demand properly served on us.”
That isn't surprising, considering the precedent set when Apple CEO Tim Cook refused to unlock the San Bernadino attackers' iPhone. Cook made the following statement on the matter: “We fear that this demand would undermine the very freedoms and liberty our government is meant to protect.”
The freedom and liberties afforded to American citizens will keep iPhone and Amazon Echo data secure and private – for now.

📅 - Rural U.K. Sees a Boost in DIY Fiber Broadband - In 2011, a group known as Broadband for the Rural North or B4RN was formed in the U.K. This group had a goal of bringing fiber broadband to eight different parishes through self-installation. After five years, the group has helped run 2,000 miles of cable and has connected a total of 40 parishes.
The rural broadband access cost 150 pounds for installation and another 30 pounds per month for those using it. Churches and schools are provided discounts and larger business pay a higher fee. B4RN has 14 paid staff members, along with volunteers, which all seek permission from farmers to dig trenches and run the fiber cables for connection.
