Stronger IoT Security Called for by Smart Card Alliance due to DDoS Attacks
📅 - After the Dyn DDoS Attack, Brian Kres, a security researcher is calling for the industry associations to handle the IoT security issues. This led to a statement from the Smart Card Alliance, which stated that security should be embedded in internet-facing systems and devices, just as it should be in smart cards.
With the estimate of 21 billion devices being connected to the internet by 2020, it's important to secure every device. The Alliance believes some of the reasons for the attacks is the growing number of devices connected to the internet.

📅 - CenturyLink Data Center Strategy Remains the Same - After making plans to acquire Level 3 Communications, CenturyLink's CEO made the announcement that it won't change the data center strategy for the company. The company is based out of Monroe, Louisiana and it's one of the largest providers of wireline telephone and internet services for consumers and businesses in the US. CenturyLink also operates a global network of data centers with colocation and managed services for customers.

📅 - Alibaba’s Quarterly Growth Exceeds Expectations - Expectations of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. quarterly sales were shattered as the company exceeded earlier projections. The company reported on Wednesday a 55 percent increase in revenue, growing even as the Chinese economy appears to be slowing.
“At this rate, Alibaba's cloud unit could break even as soon as next quarter. The company's ability to make money from advertisers on its core e-commerce platforms has also improved.” reported Li Muzhi, a Hong Kong based analyst at Arete Research Services LLP.

📅 - Microsoft Claims Russian Hackers Exploiting Windows - Tuesday, Microsoft reported a Russian hacking group had been taking advantage of a newly found Windows security flaw. The group known as Strontium, or more commonly known as “Fancy Bear”, allegedly has close ties to the Russian government and has been involved in previous U.S. political cyber attacks.
Microsoft posted a message on their website advising of a small number of “spear phishing” email attacks, although the company did not name the victims.

📅 - AWS Aims for 40% Renewable Energy with New Wind Farm - Amazon Web Services, or AWS, is the largest entity in the public cloud market – and consequentially, one of the largest energy users in the industry. An incredible amount of energy is required to run AWS data centers, and the company is taking steps to reduce and offset that amount with their new wind farm.
AWS announced the construction of their new 189 megawatt wind farm in Ohio this week. The Hardin County wind farm will generate around 530,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of what is considered renewable electricity annually. The wind farm will be in use by December 2017.
It is AWS' second such farm in Ohio, and combined with their current wind farm, they will produce around 2.2 million MWh of
