Nov, 2016 : AWS Aims for 40% Renewable Energy with New Wind Farm

📅 - Amazon Web Services, or AWS, is the largest entity in the public cloud market – and consequentially, one of the largest energy users in the industry. An incredible amount of energy is required to run AWS data centers, and the company is taking steps to reduce and offset that amount with their new wind farm.

AWS announced the construction of their new 189 megawatt wind farm in Ohio this week. The Hardin County wind farm will generate around 530,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of what is considered renewable electricity annually. The wind farm will be in use by December 2017.

It is AWS' second such farm in Ohio, and combined with their current wind farm, they will produce around 2.2 million MWh of electricity annually. This should produce around 40% of the energy used by AWS data centers. That's equivalent to the annual electricity to power 200,000 homes.
