NRDC Says Most of the World’s Data Centers Are ‘Small, Single-User Enterprise Facilities’
📅 - The U.S. activist group Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) was challenged on their stance about data center energy usage when the U.S. government released a conflicting report on energy consumption nationwide in 2014. The Department of Energy (DOE) found that the NRDC 2014 report on data center energy consumption was inaccurate and ‘grossly overstated the amount of energy the industry consumes.'
The NRDC report in question was found to be accurate by the DOE in one claim: Most of the energy efficiency gains in the data industry have been made by huge data centers for companies like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon. That does have an effect on the amount of energy being used, but according to the report, most of the world's data centers are single-user enterprise facilities, not hyperscale data centers.
