ISP Responsibilities Outlined by New FCC Privacy Rules for Customer Data
📅 - ProPublica recently outlined the new FCC privacy rules, which have been proposed for ISPs. These new rules are aimed at updating consumer privacy protection, but could cost the user a premium.
The five main rules include:
Must have permission to share customer data with third parties Name, ID number or phone number can't be linked to network activities Unencrypted data is still fair game since the proposal doesn't cover content Users will be required to opt-in for cookies A more private version of the high-speed plan from AT&T an still be sold at a higher price
The new proposal has made some consumers rights groups happy, but hasn't made any ISPs very happy. .

These products use a pay-as-you-go pricing model and the hosting will come from four global data centers.

📅 - Fuel Cell-Powered Data Center Issues Are Being Looked at by Microsoft - Fuel cells are a potential alternative energy source and data centers find them very attractive if they have a fast growing energy consumption. eBay and Apple have both deployed centralized fuel cell plants to help power their data centers, so far.
Microsoft, however, has decided to experiment with smaller fuel cells on IT racks. The hope is to get rid of the power distribution infrastructure, which has to be converted for each server. The current structure and process results in a large amount of energy being lost.
