Fuel Cell-Powered Data Center Issues Are Being Looked at by Microsoft

📅 - Fuel cells are a potential alternative energy source and data centers find them very attractive if they have a fast growing energy consumption. eBay and Apple have both deployed centralized fuel cell plants to help power their data centers, so far.

Microsoft, however, has decided to experiment with smaller fuel cells on IT racks. The hope is to get rid of the power distribution infrastructure, which has to be converted for each server. The current structure and process results in a large amount of energy being lost.

Microsoft is testing two in-rack fuel cells with one using methane and one using natural gas. They started with a $5 million grant from the government in 2014 to test out this project. The University of Maryland, Redox Power Systems and Trans-Tech are all on the project, as well.
