Mar 16, 2009 : Apache Tops Netcraft's March Web Survey
📅 - Web analytics firm Netcraft (netcraft.com) announced on Monday it has received responses from 224,749,695 sites in the March 2009 survey, bringing the total up by more than 9 million sites.
Last month, Netcraft announced its February 2009 survey received responses from 215,675,903 sites, which had a monthly gain of more than 30 million sites.
Apache (apache.com) continues to be the top developer with 104 million sites.
Meanwhile Microsoft-IIS's rise of 3.3 million sites, which can mostly be attributed to new Windows Live blogs, brings its total up to 66 million.
The relatively unknown server QQ gained another 8.9 million sites this month after making its impressive debut on the survey last month.
The server now hosts nearly 29 million Qzone sites under the qzone.qq.com domain. All of these sites are served by its own QZHTTP server.
Although little is known about QQ, some individuals have pointed out similarities that suggests QZHTTP may be a customized version of thttpd.
Netcraft records and publishes the monthly survey based on traffic data compiled by gathering visits from the Netcraft Toolbar community.
By analyzing a fixed number of high traffic sites, Netcraft is able to determine more accurately the million busiest websites on the Internet, unaffected by parked domains or the majority of personal sites, shared hosting accounts and blogs.
Additionally, Apache lead the other web servers by a landslide with a 66 percent share of the survey's websites.
Microsoft-IIS came in second with just an 18 percent share.
A more detailed look at the survey can be found on Netcraft's website.
