Mar, 2009 : Web Host Melbourne to Open UK Data Center

melbourne.co.uk logo📅 - UK web hosting provider Melbourne (melbourne.co.uk) is opening a "multi-million" pound data center at its Manchester Technopark base that will have the ability to support 1,000 new customers, according to a report on Crain's Manchester Business.

As data center space constraints continue to plague London, with more than 85 percent of the city's facilities at capacity, many companies are looking to other areas throughout the UK to develop data center space.

Last month, UK managed hosting and data center provider Netcetera announced it is expanding into a new zone of a £10 million development on the Isle of Man.

Melbourne already has 2,000 servers across its two data centers, says company founder Daniel Foster, but the data centers are nearly at capacity.

Located on the Manchester Technopark on the periphery of Manchester City Centre, Melbourne's two existing Manchester data centers are both self-managed.

Reynolds House is the company's primary facility, while Greenheys acts as Melbourne's backup/disaster recovery facility.

The data centers feature two APC UPS systems, N+1 Air conditioning, a 24-hour security staff, a full VESDA system, CCTV cameras, motion detection, a key fob access system.

Foster said that the new investmen will add an additional 3,000 servers, signalling a "a real sign of [its] intent to become a major player in the server hosting sector".

The £1m-turnover company aims to double its turnover within the next 12 months, says Forester, who says that January and February were the company's best months to date.

Since 2000, Melbourne has offered a range of dedicated server, colocation and managed hosting services to individuals, small companies, corporates, and governmental departments.

Those individuals interested in viewing a virtual tour of the data center can visit Melbourne's website.
