Jan 7, 2009 : Checkfree Warns 5M Customers of Hack

networksolutions.com logo📅 - Following a hacker hijacking in December that redirected users to a site that tried to install malicious applications, online bill payment site CheckFree.com (checkfree.com) has notified more than five million customers - not only direct CheckFree.com users, but also bank customers who use CheckFree's bill payment service to process payments.

According to a new report from IDG News Service, it is still unknown how many customers have been exposed to malware but an official notice filed to the New Hampshire Attorney General showed CheckFree has warned many more customers than expected. The document also noted that it is working with banks to contact those who tried to pay banks bills using CheckFree's services indirectly.

Melanie Tolley, vice president of communications at CheckFree's parent company, Fiserv, told IDG that among the five million notified is every member of mycheckfree.com, plus those CheckFree know had attempted to pay bills from client bill pay sites and whose sessions were not completed. None of the affected banks were identified, however, its clients include Wachovia and Bank of America.

Initial reports suggested that the criminals took control of a number of CheckFree Web domains by signing into CheckFree's Network Solutions (networksolutions.com 👉 Total Reviews: 35

) domain account, which they then redirected to a malicious website hosted in the Ukraine between 12:35 am and 10:10 am on December 2.

Fiserv estimates that only around 160,000 users were exposed to the attack, however, only PC users who were using an out-of-date version of Adobe Acrobat and had no antivirus software installed would have been affected.
