Nov 17, 2008 : The Planet Launches Storage Cloud

📅 November 17, 2008 - Merging on-premise storage performance with cloud storage capabilities, dedicated and managed hosting provider The Planet (theplanet.com -> softlayer.com -> ibm.com) is now offering a new, highly scalable and on-demand cloud storage service.

The Planet announced the limited availability of its new cloud storage service to current hosting customers Monday, which, it said, "opens a whole new world for companies to extend their hosted environments directly into the cloud." Its geographically distributed cloud storage platform offers customers free uploads to the local node and a single policy-driven account to manage all file-based storage needs without hidden fees and inconsistent performance, an industry first according to the company.

"While cloud storage often appears to be an economical approach for solving the storage dilemma so many companies face, there are often unanticipated fees," The Planet storage and data protection division general manager Rob Walters said in a statement. "Hidden bandwidth charges and the costs for actually accessing data - commonly known as puts, gets and lists - actually cause the economies to quickly evaporate. We're able to offer a flat fee so that customers know precisely what they're paying for."

Cloud storage providers often charge for sundry access services. For instance, Amazon Web Services' (aws.amazon.com ) Simple Storage Solution charges about one cent per 1,000 put, copy, post or list requests.

The Planet's cloud storage platform also offers the only geographically distributed service of its kind in the industry. Using its own D2 data center in Dallas and its partnership with Nirvanix (nirvanix.com) to leverage its global Storage Delivery Network, customers can select precisely where they want to house their data in the storage cloud on any node in either network.

"By building on the Nirvanix Storage Delivery Network, The Planet combines the best of both worlds so that customers are the real winners," Nirvanix chief executive officer Patrick Harr said in a statement. "They can either access our local Dallas node or optimize storage in virtually any corner of the world from our global cluster, combined with very attractive pricing and SLA options for building and scaling their next-generation Internet applications."

According to The Planet's website, pricing starts at 40 cents per gigabyte with volume discounts. Also, because all node uploads are free, bandwidth fees are charged only for outbound transfers.

In late October, Web hosting provider Webair (webair.com -> hostinger.com) launched a new cloud storage service system, following other recent service launches by eLina, Tilana and even The Planet partner Nirvanix.
