AWS Pledges Over $1 Billion to Support U.S. Data Center Communities

📅 October 3, 2026 - Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced plans to invest more than $1 billion over the next five years in U.S. communities hosting its data centers, amid growing scrutiny over electricity demand, utility costs, and water consumption.

The Built Together program will fund education, job training, energy affordability, conservation, and locally identified priorities. Communities will help determine where the additional spending is directed.

The announcement comes as cloud and AI infrastructure expansion faces resistance over its environmental and economic effects. AWS has major projects or expansions underway in Indiana, Louisiana, North Carolina, Virginia, and Mississippi. Amazon says its [...][... Check source for end of article ...]

📅 Sep 16, 2026 - AWS Reports Data Loss After Iran War Data Center Damage - AWS says parts of its Gulf cloud footprint cannot be recovered more than six months after Iranian drone and missile strikes damaged facilities in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, leaving some customer resources inaccessible and raising uncomfortable questions about how hyperscale cloud resilience holds up when physical infrastructure itself becomes a direct wartime target.

The technical failure is narrower than a regional cloud collapse, but the commercial implications are broader. In Bahrain, damage crossed multiple availability zones and exceeded the level Amazon Web Services says its regional and multiple zone architecture was designed to withstand. Customers that had not already [...]

📅 Sep 9, 2026 - Qualcomm Lands $60B Amazon AI Chip and Networking Deal - Qualcomm said Amazon Web Services could buy as much as $60 billion of its AI compute silicon and optical networking products under a long-term collaboration, giving the chipmaker a potentially significant route into data-center infrastructure. The agreement spans customized silicon for AI inference and high-bandwidth connectivity, while warrants tie AWS's purchasing activity directly to potential equity ownership in Qualcomm.

The size of the arrangement immediately attracts attention, but the more interesting part is its breadth. Qualcomm is not entering Amazon's infrastructure stack solely as another supplier of compute silicon. The collaboration reaches into the connectivity layer as [...]

📅 Sep 5, 2026 - AWS Targets VMware Storage Migration With NetApp Automation - Amazon Web Services is bringing NetApp storage into AWS Transform, giving enterprises a more automated route for moving VMware workloads and attached block storage into Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP. The change folds storage into coordinated migration waves with compute and networking, reducing separate tooling while steering more infrastructure directly toward managed Amazon Web Services storage services.

The change matters because storage has remained one of the more awkward parts of large VMware migrations. Compute can be rehosted relatively quickly. Networking can be mapped and rebuilt. Storage often drags a separate toolchain, replication process, testing cycle, and cutover plan behind [...]

📅 Sep 2, 2026 - Amazon Web Services Launches Graviton5 Memory-Optimized EC2s - AWS (Amazon Web Services) has made its memory-optimized Amazon EC2 R9g and R9gd instances generally available, introducing AWS Graviton5 processors to database, cache, analytics, and container workloads. The new instances promise up to 25 percent higher compute performance per vCPU, faster memory, larger caches, and substantially more network and storage bandwidth than their AWS Graviton4-based predecessors for customers.

For infrastructure buyers, the launch is another reminder that Amazon Web Services is steadily turning processor design into a cloud economics weapon. The R9g family is aimed at memory-heavy applications such as databases, in-memory caching, real-time analytics, Linux [...]

📅 Sep 1, 2026 - Azure Joins AWS Multicloud Network Model First Built With Google - AWS and Microsoft have opened managed private networking between their clouds, extending a multicloud framework AWS first unveiled with Google Cloud in 2025. The public preview lets enterprises provision AWS – Azure connectivity through cloud tooling for customers, reducing carrier coordination while giving hyperscalers more control over interconnection, resilience, encryption, monitoring, and the economics surrounding cross-cloud traffic.

For enterprises already operating across both platforms, this removes some familiar plumbing. Private AWS – Azure connectivity has typically meant coordinating cloud ports, physical circuits, routing, third-party connectivity providers, monitoring, [...]
