👈 Official Responses: 0 -> lumen.com) announced on Thursday it has opened the doors of its new UK data center in Slough, Berkshire. The company first made mention of this investment in May.


SAVVIS' new Slough facility features 37,500 square feet of raised floor and is installed with advanced features for heating, ventilation and a chilled water air conditioning system. Security and safety features designed to safeguard customer information include advanced biometric scanners and access controls, over 200 CCTV cameras and VESDA fire detection systems.

Slough seems to be a fairly popular location in the UK for data center expansion, perhaps because it has convenient access to two separate electricity sub-stations and has good connectivity to the national grid. It is also easily accessible from the M25 and M4.

Rackspace recently announced it built a carbon neutral data center in Slough. Equinix and UK web host Network I also have data centers in this area.

Prior to launching, SAVVIS says it also had independent consultancy Migration Solutions audit the environmental efficiency of its data center through its Environmental Report and Audit, which came back with positive results.

The facility was given a grading of 79 out of 100, which is quite high considering the average rating most service providers receive lie between 50 and 55.

"Since SAVVIS announced the Slough data center investment, requirements for hosting and managed services across EMEA has continued to grow and we have experienced unprecedented demand levels for hosting in Slough from companies in the UK and across the globe," says Brian Klingbeil, managing director EMEA for Savvis. "This facility has been long awaited by many of our customers who are keen to view and host within the facility from the moment the doors open."

According to the company's most recent announcement, this launch signals the completion of the SAVVIS' global data center expansion plan that featured the construction and opening of eight new data center facilities in less than two years.

Some of its most recent launches include one in Singapore in July, and another in Chicago in June.

SAVVIS now features a data center footprint of 1.43 million square feet of raised floor encompassing 29 data centers worldwide.
