Oct 14, 2008 : The Planet Expands Coast To Coast

📅 October 14, 2008 - Texas-based IT host The Planet (theplanet.com -> softlayer.com -> ibm.com) has expanded its enterprise-class network with new nodes on the US East and West Coasts, which The Planet expects will significantly enhance network performance and latency for its customers.

According to The Planet's Tuesday announcement, the new points of presence are located in Equinix (equinix.com) colocation facilities in San Jose, California, and Ashburn, Virginia.

Also, by interconnecting directly with international internet service providers in these locations, global end-user performance will be improved for the The Planet's more than 9,000 customers residing outside the US.

"Our international business continues to grow substantially, based on the quality of our world-class network and SAS 70 Type II-compliant data centers, and on the favorable exchange rate," The Planet vice president of technology Will Charnock said in a statement. "By establishing nodes on both coasts, we'll be able to interconnect with international carriers directly, bypassing third-party networks, which results in increased performance and reduced latency."

The company expects the nodes to be live in mid-November when they will begin transitioning traffic.

The Planet had previously announced enhancements to its network this month. It added new transit providers to its Texas network with 10Gbps for each, and made upgrades to allow for MPLS and IPv6.
