Sep 15, 2008 : VMware Announces Datacenter OS

📅 September 15, 2008 - Virtualization solutions provider VMware (vmware.com) announced a new, virtual data center operating system to tie together hardware resources including servers, storage and network, into an aggregated, on-premise cloud, making data centers more elastic, self-managing and self-healing.

Announced this week at the VMworld 2008 convention at the Venetian hotel in Las Vegas, VMware's Virtual Datacenter OS enables small to enterprise businesses the flexibility and the efficiency of a "lights-out" data center, where servers are kept under lock and key in the dark without human administrators. It is also designed, if needed, to safely channel workloads to external clouds to add computing capacity.

"The first 10 years of VMware were about enabling customers to build out dynamic and efficient virtual infrastructure that delivered high levels of flexibility and resiliency," VMware president and chief executive officer Paul Maritz said. "The next generation of innovative technologies in the Virtual Datacenter OS will enable companies to realize the promise of enterprise cloud computing -- where applications are automatically guaranteed the right quality of service at the lowest TCO (total cost of ownership) by harnessing internal and external computing capacity."

The VDC-OS offers control of three key areas of virtualization: infrastruture, application and cloud. Unlike a traditional OS, which is optimized for a single server and its applications, the VDC-OS is the OS for the entire data center and supports the full diversity of any application written to any OS on the server, from legacy Windows applications to modern, distributed applications running in mixed OS environments.

"Automation and virtualization technologies are shifting the center of gravity for server computing from server operating systems to a new breed of infrastructure operating system that spans many distributed servers," Gartner research vice president Thomas Bittman said in a statement.
