Aug 26, 2008 : RichardsoNEyres Issues Green Study

📅 - Data center infrastructure provider RichardsoNEyres (richardsoneyres.co.uk) announced on Tuesday it released new research that reveal that many data center operators are not taking green issues seriously enough and are adopting a do-it-yourself approach.

Conducted in association with industry analysts IDL, the RichardsoNEyres report highlights the main data center challenges IT managers are currently facing and includes a six-step action plan to help businesses overcome these issues.

The challenges start with a infrastructure and data center review in an effort to devise an action plan to simultaneously reduce cost, improve performance and reduce environmental impact.

The emissions review helps assesses the data center power and emissions of a data center to better understand how to meet or exceed government or corporate environmental targets.

The Power priority looks at potential ways to lower rising power costs. Virtualization technology enables operators to concentrate workloads onto fewer servers and storage devices, reducing CO2 emissions and running costs, while improving the use of available hardware.

Consolidation involves moving remote IT facilities into a centrally managed location or combining existing data centers, helping to reduce carbon footprint and costs, while simplifying management.

Finally, the report stresses the importance of checking the European Community Energy Star rating when  purchasing new IT equipment to assess its energy efficiency.

"Organizations going for the informal approach can lack structure in their environmental policies and this can affect the level of success that they achieve in reducing both energy costs and CO2 emissions," says Adam Kemp, director, RichardsoNEyres. "While computers may drive efficiency, the data centers that run businesses are often far from efficient.

"They are at the heart of environmental challenges created by IT but the average retailer just does not have the necessary knowledge to bring about change. They need specialist help and the actions we offer in our Thought Leadership initiatives are designed to illustrate how they can improve their carbon footprint and wider environmental position while also reducing operating costs and improving IT service delivery." Whether conducted in-house or with the help of an independent research firm, companies in the industry have commonly used whitepaper material as an effective marketing tool to promote their services.

In this case, RichardsoNEyres is using its analysis of DIY green data center techniques as a stepping stone to pitch its own data center infrastructure solutions, which includes networking and storage solutions.  In June, dedicated server hosting company SoftLayer sent out an informational paper on data centers and their impact on the environment, while Rackspace issued the results of its own customer survey which strived to get feedback and insight on the concept of green hosting.
