Aug 20, 2008 : Spiderhost Spins Safety Web

📅 - Florida web hosting provider Spiderhost (spiderhost.com) has brought an Atlanta data center online to prepare for the hurricane season already underway.

Announced this month, Spiderhost, which provides hosting for the Florida Gators, the Gatorland theme park and the Orlando Magic, will be using the landlocked Atlanta facility as "hurricane insurance." Though it is an auxiliary site, it includes a network and servers able to backup the main data center located in Orlando.

"You never can tell what Mother Nature's going to bring you, not to mention other natural occurrences like wild fires and earthquakes," says Erik Rodriquez, Senior Network Administrator at Spiderhost. "So we set up out Atlanta center to be a mirror of or Orlando center. That way people are covered in the 99.9% of potential situations."

The Atlanta center is the first of six US centers planned to go online by August 2009 to build a national network of redundant servers. "We're building a network of servers throughout the country to act as backups for each other, ensuring 100% uptime for anyone, anywhere," Rodriquez said. "We will sync data and send backups to different sites so there's virtually no way data can be lost."

Also in August, because of natural disaster concerns, colocation provider Colo 5 announced plans to newly equip a Jacksonville, Florida disaster recovery center by September able to endure a Category 5 hurricane.
