Jun 6, 2008 : Israel.com Fetches $5.88 Million

moniker.com logo📅 - Domain name marketplace Moniker (moniker.com) recently announced that domain name, Israel.com, was sold last weekend to an undisclosed buyer for an unprecedented $5.88 million.

Moniker first announced at the beginning of May that the domain would be auctioned on its domain marketplace at a starting price of $5.5 million. The auction kicked off May 23 and soon ended six days afterwards.

The domain currently hosts nothing more than a generic page with the Flag of Israel, a search engine, and several topic headers relating to Israel and its heritage, such as Hannukah, Kosher Vacations, Jewish Dating and Kabbalah, which direct visitors to a list of sponsored ad links.

The Israel.com domain was originally purchased in 1994 by Joel Noel Friedman, a 46-year-old Jewish American who, according to auction website Auctioninfo.org (auctioninfo.org), registered it out of fear that it would be misused.

Friedman decided to put the domain up for auction as a tribute to the country's 60th anniversary, but said he did anticipate that the domain would ever fetch such a high sale price.

So far it is unsure as to what the new content will entail once the transaction is completed. However, a quick browsing of other country-type domains revealed one of two kinds of sites: basic frontpages with tourist and/or cultural ad-sponsored links, as in the case of USA.com and Mexico.com, and country-specific media portals, such as the Canwest Publishing-run Canada.com.

The selling of domain names have long been a lucrative market. Last month's Moniker-hosted T.R.A.F.F.I.C EAST Live Auction facilitated the sale of more than $2.5 million in premium domain names, including GasPrices.com and Insurancerates.com selling for $225,000 each.
