Feb 6, 2008 : Equinix Expands European Footprint

📅 February 6, 2008 - Data center operator Equinix (equinix.com) announced on Wednesday that it has expanded its global footprint by acquiring Netherlands-based data center operator Virtu Secure Webservices (virtu.nl -> equinix.com). Equinix says this expansion will provide Equinix with data center facilities in the cities of Enschede and Zwolle by mid-2008.


Founded in 1999, Virtu is a provider of network-neutral data center services in the Netherlands and says it has more than 400 customers that include IBM, TUI/Thomson and the Netherlands Department of Finance. The company says that the Enschede facility is currently approximately 40 percent used while the Zwolle center, which recently opened, will be at 80 percent occupancy once all signed contracts are fully installed. Virtu is also building out a facility in Amsterdam that is expected to be open for customers later in the year.

"With our successful expansion into Europe last year, Equinix broadened its ability to provide customers with a comprehensive global data center and interconnection services platform across North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific," says Steve Smith, president and CEO of Equinix. "Amsterdam is an important location for our primary customer segments, including network service providers, digital content providers, financial services companies and enterprises, and we see significant demand from them as we extend our network-neutral operations to this market."

Last week, Equinix became a gold sponsor for Data Centre World, which will be held in London, UK from February 26 to 27.
