Oct 12, 2007 : The webhost industry: week review

aplus.net logo📅 - ISPCON is next week, and Web hosting firms have been discussing their plans, or their involvement, for several weeks now. On top of that, this week saw news related to several other events taking place in the next few weeks.

On Tuesday, The Planet announced that its chairman and CEO Douglas J. Erwin would deliver a keynote address at ISPCON on October 17, at 10:00 a.m. Erwin's presentation, entitled "Beyond Hosting: Unlocking Profits with On Demand IT Infrastructure for the SMB," will address the industry's changing landscape and what companies will have to do to remain profitable.

Also on Tuesday, data center operator 365 Main announced on Tuesday that it had been chosen to provide a virtual data center tour at the 7x24 Exchange International conference. The tour will take place at 3:45 p.m. on October 29. The conference itself will run from October 28 to 31 in Grapevine, Texas, and is designed for anyone involved with around-the-clock infrastructures.

Internet solution provider New Edge Networks reported that its president had challenged the telecommunications industry the previous week, speaking at the 2007 TelephonyLive Telecom Summit, charging the telecom industry with developing improved service level agreements, and new services to fill the price gap between DSL and T1 connections.

While several companies sought soapboxes at industry events, data center cooling solution company Degree Controls said Tuesday that it would hold its own seminar series addressing data center cooling issues November 1 in Arlington, Virginia. The company will provide analysis of the Environmental Protection Agency's report on data center efficiency, which was submitted to Congress in August.

The presentation and seminar material was the main current of this week's news, but outside that current there were several other announcements of particular note.

On Friday, Aplus.Net announced that it had continued some recent revamping by appointing two new executives, naming president of accounting and finance its CFO, and Ralph Munyan VP and general counsel. Munyan joined the company in February.

On Wednesday, UK Web hosting provider UK-2 Group announced that it had acquired the shared and domain assets of Web hosting provider Stargate, after that company decided to focus its attention on dedicated hosting and data center services. The company says customers should expect no major changes in their service, including the products offered.

Much of the major news from this week was related to conferences past or upcoming. And it is very likely that next week's news will heavily involve ISPCON, as theWHIR will be reporting live from the event.
