May, 2001 : Worldcom Expands Suite of IP-based VPN Services
📅 - Internet communications company WorldCom today unveiled IP VPN Select Access Edition, the company's first customer-managed IP VPN offering.
WorldCom IP VPN Select Access Edition, which uses Cisco Systems technology, allows companies to design, administer and upgrade their dedicated, IP-based VPN (Virtual Private Network) solution as required. VPNs, which allow companies to build Internet-based private networks (or "extranets"), are becoming serious business. According to industry analyst firm IDC, the U.S.-based carrier IP VPN market will surge from $1.28 billion in 2000 to $10 billion in 2005.
Select Access will allow customers to manage their own VPN independently, giving companies control over features like security and typical day-to-day operations, allowing companies to use their in-house expertise if so desired.
"E-business requires companies of all sizes to create more efficient and secure business processes for their global Intranet and Extranets,'' said Larry Lang, Cisco's Vice President of marketing for their service provider business. "WorldCom's leading networking solutions, combined with our broad range of IPSec VPN platforms and management tools provides enterprises with an immediate VPN solution."
The service will initially be available to U.S.-based companies in need of domestic or global deployment to 28 different countries throughout Europe and Asia Pacific, including Germany, France, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom.
