May, 2001 : PRIMUS Opens Web Hosting Data Center in Brazil

📅 - PRIMUS Telecommunications Group became the latest telecom to increase its presence in Latin America today when it announced the opening of its newest data center in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
The company also announced that the new 10,000 square-foot facility has already landed its first major client, but stopped short of saying who the client was. Instead, PRIMUS issued a release saying they had landed "a major US-based financial institution" using "bandwidth capacity on a Brazil-New York cable route under a multi-year agreement. "
PRIMUS' Brazilian subsidiary, Matrix Internet, is currently Brazil's fifth-largest ISP. The company also operates Brazil's fifth-largest portal. The company said expanding their operations in Brazil was a logical move because Brazil currently represents approximately half of the telecom market in Latin America.
"There are few competitors in Brazil that can rival our suite of high quality data, Internet and hosting services," K. Paul Singh, president and CEO of PRIMUS. "We look forward to growing our market presence as a leading Brazilian ISP by leveraging our existing customer relationships and attracting new businesses that are embracing the benefits of the digital economy."
The Latin American Web hosting market has become a hot commodity in recent months, with a number of companies scrambling to obtain a piece of what is widely considered to be a relatively untouched marketplace. Hosting and IDC services company OptiGlobe, for example, opened two data centers in Latin America last month - their third in the past five months.
