Jul, 2001 : Nortel Launches Metropolitan Optical Components Portfolio

📅 - Nortel Networks (nortelnetworks.com) has launched a range ofnew optical components designed to help providers of equipment formetropolitan optical networks and network edge systems eliminate bandwidthbottlenecks.

Announced at the 2001 National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference, thesecomponents are to address many of the key issues in today's metropolitanmarket by offering reduced device sizes, higher levels of functionalintegration, lower power dissipation, greater network simplicity, and lowernetwork costs.
Barbara Callaghan, president Nortel's optical components group, says thatNortel's portfolio will offer solutions for both the client and line sidesof the metropolitan optical network. This will include tunable andcontinuous wave transmitters, transmitter modules, receivers, transpondermodules, amplifiers, and variable optical attenuators.
Nortel Networks? new metro optical components will also providefiber-to-packet interface solutions, taking information from physicaloptical layer devices through framing and protocol handling to the networkprocessor interface.
Nortel Networks launched 14 metro optical components and modules at NFOEC,including:
a 2.5 Gbps buried heterostructure transmitter, featuring maximum reach of175 kilometers with minimum dispersion penaltya 10 Gbps APD Preamp Receiver with best-in-class performance and lowa 1310 nanometer 10 Gbps Transponder Module with very low powerdissipation, and a footprint smaller than a business card to address boardand rack level space constraintsa Multi-Wavelength Gain Module, featuring a compact amplifier andintegrated variable optical attenuator10-Gigabit Ethernet Switch Router solutions, enabling simple, very highspeed, low cost access to dark fiber and DWDM (dense wavelength-divisionmultiplexing) optical infrastructure
